Dry eye can occur when your eyes aren’t producing quality tears, or your tears are evaporating too quickly.
Your tear film consists of 3 layers:
- The oily outer layer
- The watery middle layer
- The inner mucus layer
When the glands that produce these elements of your tears are not functioning properly or become inflamed, dry eye can occur. Inflammation can also result from meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).
What Is MGD?
Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a chronic and progressive condition that affects the function of the meibomian glands in the eyelids. These glands produce an oil layer that helps lubricate the surface of the eyes and prevent tears from evaporating too quickly. With MGD, the oils produced by the glands become thicker and clog the glands, leading to inflammation, eyelid irritation, and dry eye symptoms such as irritation, watery eyes, and a scratchy feeling.
MGD is a common cause of evaporative dry eye and can be diagnosed through a dry eye assessment.
Signs, Symptoms, & Risk Factors to Look Out For
Your environment and other risk factors such as exposure to the wind or dry air, long-term contact lens wear, and digital eye strain, can increase the chances of dry eye development.
Common signs and symptoms of dry eye can include:
- Watery eyes
- Light sensitivity
- A stinging, scratching, or burning feeling
- Blurry vision

Our Dry Eye Treatments & Solutions
We offer a variety of dry eye treatments and solutions, including OptiLight by Lumenis and meibomian gland expression, to help address your dry eye symptoms and regain your comfort.
OptiLight by Lumenis
OptiLight by Lumenis is a light-based, non-invasive treatment done in the area below the eyes to manage dry eye. The first and only IPL FDA-approved for dry eye management.
The treatment is safe, gentle, and is backed by more than 20 clinical studies.
OptiLight uses precise pulses of light to reduce the inflammation that is typically associated with dry eye disease, improve tear break-up time, and increase meibomian gland functionality.
Meibomian Gland Expression
Meibomian gland expression is a simple yet effective procedure that can provide relief to those suffering from dry eye. This noninvasive procedure involves applying gentle pressure to the meibomian glands, which are responsible for producing the oil layer of the tear film.
By expressing the oil, the quality and quantity of tears improve, reducing dry eye symptoms, such as irritation, itching, and watering eyes.
Medicated Eye Drops
If you’re suffering from chronic dry eye, medicated eye drops such as Restasis may be an effective treatment option to relieve your discomfort. Restasis eye drops contain an active ingredient that helps to reduce inflammation and increase the eye’s natural ability to produce tears.
Eyelid Debridement
Eyelid debridement is a natural treatment method that helps remove debris or bacteria that have accumulated on the eyelids, improving the quality and quantity of tears produced and reducing feelings of irritation.
This simple procedure is typically performed in-office by our team and involves using a specialized tool to gently remove the debris or bacteria built up on the eyelids.
Omega-3 Supplements
Omega-3 supplements are an effective and natural treatment option for those dealing with dry eye. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential nutrients that can help reduce inflammation in the body, including the eyes, and promote overall health.
The Bruder Mask & Avenova for Home Maintenance
The Bruder Mask and Avenova are 2 effective treatment options for patients dealing with blepharitis, a common eye condition that causes inflammation of the eyelids.
The Bruder Mask is a comfortable, easy-to-use warming mask that helps increase blood circulation around the eyes, reducing inflammation and providing relief from symptoms such as dry eyes, styes, and blepharitis. The mask is heated in the microwave and can be used for several minutes at a time.
Avenova is an antibacterial eyelid and eyelash cleaner that helps to eliminate harmful bacteria and debris from the surface of the eyelids, reducing inflammation and providing relief from symptoms. The gentle, non-toxic formula does not irritate the eyes, making it an excellent option for those with sensitive eyes.
